FHSD Missouri Gold Star Schools

The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has recognized three Francis Howell elementary schools, Becky-David, Daniel Boone, and Warren, as
2019 Missouri Gold Star Schools. All three FHSD schools have also been nominated by the U.S. Department of Education for recognition as 2019 National Blue Ribbon Schools. Only five other schools in Missouri were recognized this year as Gold Star Schools.

The Gold Star Schools program is designed to identify schools that are performing at a high level academically and making exceptional progress. “The students, faculty, and staff at these eight schools have earned this recognition,” said Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education Margie Vandeven. “Their efforts reflect Missouri’s continuing work to prepare every student to succeed in school and in life.”

“We are extremely honored to have three FHSD schools selected by the state for this prestigious award,” said Superintendent Dr. Mary Hendricks-Harris. “Our schools have been very focused on providing the best education for our students and continuously improving. This recognition is a testament to the hard work our students put in to achieve those results and our dedicated staff that goes above and beyond every single day to help our students excel.”

The Gold Star Schools criteria also requires student test scores to be in the top 15 percent off all public schools in Missouri. “We are honored to be recognized as a Missouri Gold Star School,” said Daniel Boone Principal Kevin Armour. “This recognition is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our staff and students. The Daniel Boone community takes great pride in our school and we would not be able to continue to achieve at such high levels without their support.”

The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program and the Missouri Gold Star Schools Program utilize the same criteria for nomination. In order to recommend a school to the Commissioner of Education as a Missouri Gold Star School:

  • The school must meet the 2019 criteria outlined by the U.S. Department of Education for the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program.
  • The school must complete the National Blue Ribbon Schools application.
  • The U.S. Department of Education must accept the schools National Blue Ribbon Schools application.

Gold Star Schools must meet one more year of qualifying Missouri Assessment Program scores in English language arts and mathematics to become National Blue Ribbon Schools, that announcement will come in the fall of 2019. The Blue Ribbon Schools Program sets a standard of excellence for all schools striving for the highest level of achievement.
